About this tool

Where in the sky are the Sun and Moon for a given observer (lat, lon) and time, plus the times of the day's events.

Reported quantities

  • Altitude (above horizon) and azimuth (0° = North, 90° = East) at the requested instant.
  • Apparent RA / Dec (J2000 not corrected for nutation / aberration; ~0.01° accuracy).
  • Sun: distance in AU and ecliptic longitude.
  • Moon: distance in km and illuminated fraction (with a phase name).

Day events

For the same UT date, the rise / transit / set times are computed using a non-iterative single-day approximation (≤ a couple of minutes of error for the Sun, a few minutes for the Moon). Twilight thresholds:

  • Civil dawn / dusk: Sun at −6°
  • Nautical: Sun at −12°
  • Astronomical: Sun at −18°
  • Sunrise / Sunset: upper limb at −0.833° (refraction + radius)
  • Moonrise / Moonset: centre at −0.583° (parallax − refraction)

"Always above" / "always below" appears for polar regions where the body never crosses the horizon on that date.

Input notes

Latitude north positive, longitude east positive. Time is your local clock; UT is computed from your browser's timezone. The calendar month grid (week starts Saturday) picks the date; use the time field and Now for the clock. Presets list one seat of government per ISO country from bundled city data.
