String art
Create cardioid, nephroid and parabola envelopes from straight threads.
About this tool
Choose an example or change the pin count (2–512) and circle multiplier (integer 1–512). Valid edits redraw directly. Settings contains the arrangement, optional thread highlight, exact thread number and slider. PNG saves the current drawing and its parameters. Raw input drafts persist, including incomplete edits; images and generated edges are not stored. Reset restores the cardioid example.
On the circle, pin i connects to k·i mod N, with indices starting at 0. With many equally spaced pins, k=2 approximates a cardioid envelope and k=3 a nephroid. These are finite straight segments, not exact smooth curves. k=1 produces only zero-length connections; other multipliers can also produce repeated segments.
On perpendicular rails, position i connects to N−1−i on the other rail. Equal spacing creates a parabolic envelope; the multiplier does not apply. The orange thread shows one construction segment. The thread number starts at 1 for selection, while the circle formula uses zero-based pin indices. Calculations and exports stay in your browser.
