Snowflake explorer
Design reproducible radial snowflake patterns and inspect the same branches in 2D or 3D.
About this tool
A seeded decorative branch pattern is copied around the centre. It has the chosen rotational symmetry; reflection symmetry is not guaranteed. This is not a physical simulation of ice growth.
- Choose 3–12 arms and detail 1–7, then Generate. The text seed reproduces the pattern; an empty seed is valid.
- Branch factor is multiplied by a sampled 0.66–0.84 for each side branch. Branch positions, angles and lengths remain random even when Tip growth is zero.
- Tip growth is the percentage chance of an extra continuation at a segment end. This continuation has length 0.72 times the branch factor and a small sampled turn.
- Details stop at a segment length below 0.006 relative to the root length 1, or at a total budget of 12,000 segments. The same capped arm is copied, so rotational symmetry remains intact. A budget message marks incomplete detail.
- Both views use every generated segment. 2D fits the actual extent and uses equal axis units. 3D tubes are centred in z=0 with exactly the same endpoints. Drag to rotate, Ctrl/Meta+wheel to zoom; plain wheel scrolls.
- Colours show branching level. View, colour, resize and theme reuse the geometry. Model-input changes invalidate the result. PNG saves the computed view, parameters, budget status and the 3D camera.
- After the first Generate, changing model inputs updates the pattern automatically. Options contains branch factor, tip growth and the reproducible text seed. New variation chooses a new seed; Generate repeats the current inputs. Ctrl/Meta+wheel zooms in 2D and mouse dragging moves the view. Reset fits the current view without changing inputs. Mouse views and generated branches are not saved between visits; raw input drafts are retained.
