Sandpile (BTW)

Each site holds grains. At height z≥4 it topples: one grain goes to each of the four neighbouring sites. At an open boundary, an outgoing grain leaves the system.

One drop is fully stabilized before the next. The avalanche size is its number of topplings. The grain balance shows that grains still on the grid equal dropped grains minus grains lost at the boundary.
