Level Sets & Gradient

Contours join points with equal f(x,y). The gradient arrows point in the direction of steepest increase and are perpendicular to regular contours. The radial bowl has concentric circles; the saddle f=x²−y² has intersecting zero contours and a critical point at the origin.
