Knot Guide

Illustrated step-by-step guides for six common knots, with printable instructions and image sources.

About this tool

Select a knot and use Previous/Next to view its actual rope sequence. All steps opens the whole sequence; Print produces a separate sheet with illustrations, instructions and source/license credit. Changing the knot starts at its first step. The selected knot and step are kept during navigation and reload.

The working end is the free end being moved; the standing part is the longer part. A bight is a doubled section without crossed legs. Artwork and photographs are licensed sources, not simulated knot mechanics; a rope’s path, not just its color, matters. The figure-eight here is a stopper knot, not a rethreaded tie-in loop. The reef knot is a binding knot, not a general-purpose rope-joining bend. The taut-line example is ABoK 1800 / 1856.

Practice slowly with ordinary cord and inspect each crossing. This is a reference, not a substitute for hands-on instruction. Climbing, rescue and load-bearing uses require qualified instruction and inspection. No strength ratings or suitability claims for a particular rope or load. Sources remain available under Image sources and on the printed sheet.
