Diceware Passphrase

Generate memorable passphrases from 1,296 short English EFF words with secure random selection and inspectable entropy.

About this tool

Generate a memorable passphrase from short English words. Choose a whole number from 3 to 16 and press Generate. The default is eight words. Copy copies the complete phrase, including spaces. Changing the count clears the previous result; Reset returns to eight without generating.

The bundled list contains 1,296 distinct words from EFF Short Wordlist #1, by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (2016), licensed under CC BY 4.0. The original words and order are retained; four-dice codes were removed for JSON storage. The English wordlist remains the same in every interface language.

Each word is selected independently and uniformly with Web Crypto. Rejection sampling discards the small out-of-range tail of 32-bit draws before reducing to an index. Repeated words are allowed. No phrase is generated if the browser’s secure random source or the wordlist is unavailable.

Entropy is n × log₂(1296), about 10.34 bits per word: six words provide 62.0 bits, eight 82.7. This describes the random generation process, not a strength estimate inferred from the appearance of the phrase. Choosing words yourself or removing repetitions changes that model.

Generation happens in your browser after you request it. The phrase is not saved in the URL or tool state and is not sent to a service by this tool. Generated words are separated by spaces; yo-yo is one word in the list. Copy places the phrase on your system clipboard.

More words increase resistance to guessing. Three to seven words have less entropy than the default eight. The entropy figure does not predict a cracking time; account controls and password hashing also matter. Use a separate phrase for each purpose, keep it secret, and never reuse a published example.
